Junior Big Mountain Challenge 2012

North American Junior Freeski Tour
March 2-4, 2012

Lake Louise TV

Lake Louise, Canada’s Favorite Ski Area, is excited to announce that the Junior Big Mountain Challenge has been named one of two Canadian stops in the North American Junior Freeski Tour. The tour, which includes Red Mountain, Crested Butte, Crystal Mountain, Squaw Valley, Grand Targhee, Snowbird, Stevens Pass, and Winter Park will determine the North American Junior Freeski Champion. The International Freeski Association’s decision to include Lake Louise in the tour has stemmed from the increasing popularity of the sport and demand for IFSA sanctioned events.

This season’s Jr. Big Mountain Challenge will take place March 1-4, 2012. To align with the International Freeski Association (IFSA)’s event criteria, Lake Louise will be making minor changes to judging format & age categories. The newly updated judging format supported by IFSA was developed by the Subaru World Freeskiing Tour for the 2011 competition season. The IFSA’s goal is to create a unified judging format and ease the transition for young athletes from junior events into the World Tour. The revised format replaces the controversial ‘aggression’ category with a ‘style’ category.

The Age categories for the championships will be 12-14 & 15-18. The Jr. Big Mountain Challenge will offer a 7-11 age category but no points towards the championship will be awarded. To compensate for high number of athletes wishing to take part in the event, Lake Louise will also be adding an additional qualifying day on Friday, March 2nd.

To participate in North American Junior Freeski Tour event, athletes between the ages of 12-18 are required to be members of IFSA. Memberships can be purchased for $50.00 USD on www.freeskiers.org. Memberships must be purchased prior to the athlete’s first Tour event and are valid for the remainder of the 2011/2012 competitive season.
