The North Face Jr. Big Mountain Challenge

The North Face Junior Big Mountain Challenge returns for its 13th season for what will be another exciting event to earn those valuable points. NEW THIS YEAR: SNOWBOARD CATEGORIES WILL BE ADDED! As always, The North Face will be there with lots of epic prizing & giveaways!

Details

The event is a part of the North American Freeride Junior Tour, sanctioned by the International FreeSkier & Snowboarder Association. Freeriders compete in Big 7 over the course of two days and are judged on line, control, fluidity, technique, and style.

  • Ages 7-11 Boys Ski.
  • Ages 7-11 Girls Ski.
  • Ages 12-14 Boys Ski.
  • Ages 12-14 Girls Ski.
  • Ages 15-18 Junior Men Ski.
  • Ages 15-18 Junior Women Ski. 
  • Ages 15-18 Junior Men Snowboard.
  • Ages 15-18 Junior Women Snowboard.

Please note: We are going to gauge the interest from the Snowboarders to determine which categories we need to offer. We have capacity for 150 athletes in the entire event and we will manage the cap in each category.

IFSA Membership & The Driven Platform

To participate in this IFSA sanctioned event, you must have an active membership through the IFSA before you can compete. This will link you to the registration platform, called The Driven. If this will be your first and only Freeride competition this season, you only need to pay $25.00!

Discounted Lift Tickets

We will be offering 20% off the multi-day rate for lift tickets. Please see the Check-In desk on Thursday to purchase your tickets, or pick up a voucher the morning of the event. This will be made available to parents, coaches & siblings. 

Coaches who are IFSA Certified are eligible for a lift ticket deal. Certain criteria must be met. Please email leigha.stankewich@skilouise.com for details.

Schedule

Thursday February 28th, 2019: CHECK IN & OPTIONAL INSPECTION DAY

  • 8:00am - 4:00pm: Athlete Check-In and late registration at the SEASON PASS DESK, Whiskey Jack Cafeteria.
  • Non-mandatory Inspection day in the Venue, please see details under Inspection Rules.
  • 9:00am - 12:00pm: The Qualifier Run (ER-7) will be CLOSED to athletes as well as the public. This will ensure that the venue can be ready for the competition with boundaries roped off, etc. 
  • 12:00pm: Inspection for 7-11 year olds.
  • 1:00pm: Inspection for 12-14 year olds. 
  • 2:00pm: Inspection for 15-18 year olds. 

Friday March 1st, 2019: 7-11 & 12-14 QUALIFIER RUNS

  • 7:15am - 8:00am: Check In at the SITZMARK LOUNGE (for the age groups competing today only please.)
  • 8:00am: Coaches meeting at the SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 8:15am: Mandatory Athlete meeting at the SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 9:00am: Load the Glacier & Top of the World Chairs.
  • 9:20am - 10:30am: Venue Inspection (no hitting of features at this time.) We will run groups from the youngest to the oldest. Please check in with the Patroller at the top of the venue.
  • 10:30am: Qualifier Runs all day.
  • 4:00pm - 6:00pm: Results of the day at the SITZMARK LOUNGE, once the judges have had time to tally the scores. Bib return available.

Saturday March 2nd, 2019: 15-18 QUALIFIER RUNS

  • 7:15am - 8:00am: Check In at the SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 8:00am: Coaches meeting, SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 8:15am: Mandatory Athlete meeting, SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 9:00am: Load the Glacier & Top of the World Chairs.
  • 9:20am - 10:30am: Venue Inspection (no hitting of features.) We will run groups from the youngest to the oldest. Please check in with the Patroller at the top of the venue.
  • 10:30am: Qualifier Runs all day.
  • 4:00pm - 6:00pm: Results of the day in the SITZMARK LOUNGE, once the judges have had time to tally the scores. Bib Return available. 

Sunday March 3rd, 2019: ALL CATEGORY FINALS

  • 8:00am - 8:30am: Check In at the SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 8:00am: Coaches meeting at the SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 8:15am: Mandatory Athlete meeting at the SITZMARK LOUNGE.
  • 9:00am: Load Glacier & Top of the World Chairs. 
  • 9:20am - 10:30am: Venue Inspection (no hitting of features.) We will run groups from the youngest to the oldest. Please check in with the Patroller at the top of the venue.
  • 10:30am: Finals Runs all day.
  • 3:00pm - 6:00pm: Please join us in the SITZMARK LOUNGE. Awards will be held once the judges have tallied the scores. There is no set time for the awards. Once the last category has finished, please make your way to the Sitzmark. The judges generally need at least 1 hour after getting back to the main lodge to review and post the results. We will do our best to do this in a timely fashion as we know everyone has to trek home!
Inspection Rules

These Inspection Rules are governed by the IFSA and the Lake Louise Ski Resort Patrol. 

  • Athletes may go in and INSPECT their lines only at this time, which includes skiing or riding down and looking at the features. 
  • One coach may be present with the Athlete. If the Athlete is an Independent, one parent may be present. 
  • Athletes are NOT allowed to jump over any features. 
  • Athletes MUST have their bib on, which is to be picked up from the Event Crew prior to the Inspection Run (at Check-In.)
  • This area will be monitored by the Technical Director and athletes will be DQ'd if these rules are not followed.
Bibs

Athlete bibs will be worn during the event. A deposit of $40 cash is required per bib at check in. You will receive this back when the bib is returned at the end. 

Waiver

All participants must sign an event waiver for the Lake Louise Ski Resort as well as the IFSA. An Athlete Package will be emailed out to parents prior to the event which will include both waivers.
